Naples is celebrating for the nomination under UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, Italian media report. A proposal approved unanimously yesterday by the Italian National Unesco Committee backed by nearly 850 thousand signatures.

This is a confirmation of an already advanced nomination made last year that did not pass due to a maximum number of requests of no more than 50 per year.

The list is composed of intangible heritage elements that concerned communities and states parties consider require urgent measures to keep them alive, according to the UNESCO website, and Naples has long been determined to maintain its reputation as the spiritual home of one of the world’s favourite foods, Pizza, as the role of the pizza maker, or pizzaiolo, and the wood-fire oven are main characteristics of the Neapolitan Pizza.

On March the 14th the nomination will be made official at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and then begin a long campaign for the final vote scheduled in 2017 backed by Mr. Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, Salvatore Cuomo, Rossopomodoro and APN.

In 2009, upon Italy’s request, Neapolitan pizza was safeguarded in the European Union as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed dish.
